HSBC Bank - Ocean Art Installation
This art installation was on display for a private commission for HSBC Bank in Bondi, Sydney Australia during 2022-2023. The artwork spreads the message of conserving our oceans, with the intent of highlighting the worldwide debilitating issues of overfishing and marine plastic pollution, encouraging people to think about how we can look after our oceans.
Melissa is passionate about saving our ocean and the beautiful sea creatures that she created this inspiring artwork in hope that would encourage people to think about how we can look after our oceans.
There is over 150 million tons of plastic already floating in the sea, which is killing so many sea creatures. The issue is that 70% of micro plastic at sea comes from fishing gear. We can still do our part by being more conscious of our plastic use and reducing excessive consumption of seafood.
Melissa has been making a conscious effort to reduce her plastic use in her day-to-day life, and this artwork is plastic-free and is using 95% recycled materials, using an internal frame with recycled steel, along with a used fishing net donated by @jessleitmanis and materials sourced from op shops and recycled companies such as @reversegarbageqld
All textile elements were handmade, using a variety of techniques to create unique coral and sea-life.
